The Nyamatsatse Festival-Ceremony (Bira reNyamatsatse, Festival of the Morning Star), a festival of spirituality, healing, arts, and celebration of African cultures and spiritual realities is set for its third edition in 2024. The festival brings together a celebration of indigenous arts, culture, healing practices, spiritualities and traditions from and for Zimbabwe, Southern Africa and beyond. The third edition of the festival will focus on Africa's Spiritual History - the Story of Nehanda Nyamhita.
This year's theme, Africa's Spiritual History is an exploration of how the Spirit(s) intervened and continue to shape the path of the history of the African continent. We reject the idea that spirituality is merely convention, and instead want to place at the forefront the reality that spirituality has shaped and continues to shape the process of destiny of human lives and communities both on the continent and in the world. As such, the festival is also a traditional celebration of the Stars (the Keepers of all of the Times), Star Ancestors, Star Mythologies, and Humanity's ever-present connection to the Stars.
The Nyamatsatse Festival will involve a seven-day journey of presentations, workshops, performances, ceremonies and shared creative spaces, and we will end the festival with a traditional all-night celebration on the seventh day.
Nyamatsatse is about connection and putting together the broken pieces of humanity, as well as celebrating arts and culture (tsika nemagariro).
The festival will include speakers from various disciplines and traditions, ranging from artists to traditional chiefs. The planned events shall aim to explore how best we can approach these questions and issues with integrity,
discernment, and wisdom. The festival will last for seven days, from around 10 am through the evening, with a tea and lunch break with variety of visual and performance arts (music, theatre, spoken word, dance, fine arts displays, etc) mixed in. On the final day (the seventh day), there will be a traditional all-night celebration. The form of the festival takes us from the Great Ending (on day 1), to the Rebirth of the hope of the Morning Star (Nyamatsatse, on day 7).
This year's edition will also feature the story of Nehanda Nyamhita, and the role of her spirit in ancient history of modern-day Zimbabwe, as well as her connection with star mythologies and what that means for us today.
Please consider applying for our festival-ceremony, supporting our festival-ceremony in any way that you can, and attending as well.
